Understanding Preview, Save and Publish

When you are making edits you are editing a temporary copy of the page you loaded into Buildor/Lite.

To make the changes live so that your visitors see your updates, you need to save the changes to your web server.

You can either use our integrated FTP tool or your own FTP client (software).

FTP GUIDE: read our full guide to FTP here

You will need to register and activate your account first - it's free and very quick.

Preview

Sometimes when you are editing a page, you want to Preview what that page will look like in its live state. Depending on which browser you are using, when your page loads into Buildor/Lite, you may notice that links change color and certain elements of a page, Flash files for example, don't display. In Preview mode all these elements will be returned as normal.

Preview also sets the page status in your cookie. We use cookies to manage your Log in and Log out process and to remember which page you were last editing. If you Preview from time to time it will ensure your progress is saved if your computer happens to crash or if you make mistakes that you can't undo.

Save

When you are happy with your edits you can choose to save the resulting HTML file (HTML is the format that your page is in) to your computer so you can upload it to your server using an FTP client or email it to someone else for them to upload.

Click Save and enter your filename by overwriting badger.htm

If you choose the same filename as the file you originally loaded into Buildor/Lite, when you FTP the file to your server, it will overwrite the old file and make the new one live.

If you choose a new file name it will create a new file on your server.

When you save the file depending on whether you are using a Mac or a PC the file will end up in different places:

Mac - FireFox:

When you click Save, the file will be saved to your desktop.

Windows - Internet Explorer:

When you click Save you see this window:

Save -
IE1

Click Save and you will be given a choice of where to save the file, click Save again and the file will start to download and you will then see this window:

Save -
IE1

Now click Open Folder to open the folder containing the file.

You can now FTP your file to your web server or email on to someone else.

Windows - FireFox:

When you click Save you see this window:

Save -
FF1

Click Save and the file will start to download and you will then see this window:

Save -
FF1

If you Right | Click on the file in this window you are given the option to Open Containing Folder so you can see where the file downloaded to.

You can now FTP your file to your web server or email on to someone else.

Publish

The Publish feature allows you to use our integrated FTP tool. We save your FTP details EXCLUDING your password so that you don't have to input them each time.
